Press release. AGL (Africa Global Logistics), co-shareholder of Meridian Port Services Ltd (MPS), proudly announces the official inauguration of Phases 1 and 2 of the Tema Port extension.
The ceremony, held on 13 November 2025, was graced by His Excellency John Dramani Mahama, President of the Republic of Ghana; Hon. Joseph Bukari Nikpe, the Honourable Minister of Transport; Philippe Labonne, Chairman of AGL; Mohamed Samara, CEO of MPS, and other distinguished guests.
The expansion, executed by MPS, whose principal shareholders are AGL, APM Terminals, and the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority (GPHA), represents a total investment of US$1.5 billion. The project involved reclaiming 1,270,000 square meters of land from the Atlantic Ocean, installing state-of-the-art equipment, and implementing digitalised processes, further solidifying Tema’s position as a leading maritime hub in West Africa.
The new terminal now spans 127 hectares, featuring a 1.4 km quay and four berths capable of docking the largest container vessels with draft of 16m and operated with technologically advanced processes. This expansion increases Tema Port’s annual containers handling capacity from 800,000 TEUs to 3 million TEUs. By deploying international best practices, the upgraded MPS Terminal 3 of Tema Port ensures seamless maritime operations and enhances the competitiveness of Ghana’s logistics corridor.

MPS’s expanded infrastructure reinforces Ghana’s ambition to be a frontrunner in the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA). The project enhances connectivity to regional and international trade routes, strengthens trade flows, and accelerates the development of value chains across West Africa and the Sahel. Now recognized as a « Green Terminal » by Bureau Veritas, MPS combines cutting-edge port infrastructure with sustainable practices to support innovative logistics solutions that contribute to the growth of African economies.
